Before and After the Cruise
A night before you sail and a calm trip home remove most cruise stress.
Start Planning With an AdvisorBefore and After the Cruise: Stays, Flights and Timing
The days around a cruise decide how relaxed the whole vacation feels. A night in the port city before you sail, and a sensible plan for getting home, remove the two biggest sources of cruise stress: missed ships and missed flights.
Arrive the Day Before
A ship will not wait for a delayed flight. Arriving the day before embarkation gives you a buffer against delays, cancellations and lost bags, and a chance to rest. For international cruises, or if you want to see the port city, consider two nights. Our sister site Cruise Airfare goes deeper on choosing flights and airports for each port.
Where to Stay
- Near the port, if you want a short transfer on embarkation day.
- Near the airport, if you arrive late and want to rest first.
- In the city center, if the port city is part of the trip.
- In a park-and-cruise hotel, if you drive; Free Cruise Parking explains the options.

Planning the Trip Home
Ships usually arrive early in the morning, and disembarkation takes time. Leave a generous gap before your flight home, especially at busy ports and when you must clear customs. If your flight leaves late, many travelers book a post-cruise night or a day tour that ends at the airport.

Pre- and Post-Cruise Packages
Many cruise lines sell hotel packages with transfers, and an advisor can arrange the same independently. Compare the convenience of a package with the price and location of booking yourself. A line’s package often includes the transfer to the ship and help with luggage; an independent hotel may be better placed for sightseeing. Either way, confirm how you will reach the pier and at what time.
A Checklist for the Days Around Your Cruise
- Flights booked to arrive at least a day early.
- Hotel booked with a way to reach the port.
- Transfers arranged in both directions.
- Hand luggage with documents, medication and a change of clothes.
- Return flight with time to spare after disembarkation.

Making the Most of a Pre-Cruise Day
A day in the port city is part of the vacation, not just a buffer. In Seattle, Barcelona, Rome’s port of Civitavecchia or Copenhagen, a day of sightseeing before the ship sails turns travel fatigue into a highlight. Keep it gentle: a walking tour, a good dinner, an early night. Check out of the hotel with enough time for the transfer, and carry your documents, medication and valuables in a small bag, because checked luggage goes to the ship separately and can take until evening to reach your cabin.
If Something Goes Wrong on the Way
If a flight is delayed or cancelled on the way to the port, call the cruise line and your advisor straight away. A day of margin often means the problem is solved with a later flight. Travel insurance that covers missed departures helps if it is not. That is exactly why the day-before rule exists.
